Marine emission monitoring

As global shipping advances toward a greener future, shipowners face increasingly regulatory emission reduction requirements set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Experience from vessel operations and Port State Control inspections shows that NOx emissions can exceed expected levels, even on TIER III-certified vessels. The challenge is often not the technology itself, but limited visibility into whether SCR and EGR systems continue to perform as intended over time.

Continuous emissions monitoring provides verified, real-time insight into actual performance, helping shipowners demonstrate compliance, maintain accurate documentation, and optimize system operation to ensure sustained efficiency.

Why continuous emission monitoring matters

Continuous NOx measurement technology is mature, reliable, and already available for marine applications. The cost of installing CEMS is modest compared to the investment in NOx abatement systems and insignificant relative to the environmental impact of non-compliance.

Continuous monitoring ensures that emission control systems operate effectively at all times, not just during inspections. This guarantees that vessels consistently meet regulatory requirements while delivering real, long-term environmental benefits.

Trusted solution for scrubber (EGCS) compliance

To reduce air-polluting sulphur emissions, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) introduced a global limit on sulphur content of marine fuels from 1 January 2020. Known as the Global Sulphur Cap 2020, this regulation limits sulphur levels to 0.50% m/m worldwide, with even stricter 0.10% m/m requirements in Emission Control Areas (SECAs).

Scrubber compliance is complex, requiring vessels to continuously demonstrate that sulphur emissions are effectively reduced under all operating conditions in line with IMO regulations.

To verify compliance, accurate monitoring of SO2 and CO2 emissions is essential.

Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) provide real-time data and documented evidence, enabling shipowners and operators to demonstrate compliance while supporting efficient and reliable scrubber performance.
